“Shaker Style” furniture was first created in the 18th Century by a religious group that broke away from the more famous Quakers. They were called the Shakers, or Shaking Quakers because of their often animated way of physically expressing their faith. While not directly related to their furniture creation, the Shakers were ahead of their time in the fact that they strongly believed in Gender Equality. Women in Shaker society regularly held leadership roles (Cause you needed another reason to love Shaker Cabinets)!
Other important aspects of Shaker society include their belief in simple living, pacifism, architecture, and of course furniture.
Their simple lifestyle and utilitarian belief system directly contributed to their development of the Shaker Style furniture that has made a big resurgence! Shakers did not want to waste material, and believed that the most simple and effective way to build things would be the best. The clean, minimalist, but effective construction of our modern White Shaker cabinets reflect the same ideas!
